Fire Department Ride Along Program
The Westminster Fire Department provides citizens an opportunity to complete a ride along with one of our stations to observe and learn about the array of services that our department provides. Interested participants must be at least 16 years of age. Those participating under the age of 18 must provide parent or guardian authorization and must complete the Parental/Guardian Release Form. Ride along applicants can request a minimum of a 4-hour ride up to a maximum of a 12-hour ride with our department.
Approved riders must abide by our dress code and rider guidelines. A ride can be terminated at any time should the station officer or Battalion Chief deem it necessary. All rider applicants must submit their request and application forms through Fire Administration and must give at least two weeks’ notice before the requested ride along date. If you are interested in completing a ride with the Westminster Fire Department, please download the required forms and submit them to Administrative Technician Kelly Ehredt. Applications will be accepted in person at Fire Administration located at 9110 Yates St. or by email to Kelly Ehredt at kehredt@westminsterco.gov.
All Westminster Fire Department rider applicants are subject to approval. If you have any questions or would like more information about the Westminster Fire Department Ride Along Program, please call 303-658-4500.
Citizens' Academy
The next Fire Citizens' Academy will be held in spring 2025. Keep an eye on our website and social media for more details!
Do you want to learn about all operations of the Westminster Fire Department? If so, check out our Citizens' Academy! Learn about fire and medical response in our community, plus water rescue, vehicle extrication, fire investigations, and more. The academy is geared to inform citizens about WFD operations as well as fire and life safety.
You do not need to be a Westminster resident in order to apply and participate but preference will be given to residents in the instance that applications reach capacity. Youth 15 years of age and older can apply but must attend the academy with an adult guardian. Please note, this course is simply to gain community knowledge and is not a precursor to a career in fire or emergency services. You must be able to attend at least 80% of the academy, barring emergencies.
If you have additional questions about our citizens' academy, please email Public Information Specialist Emily Peek at epeek@westminsterco.gov.
Flashover Fire Camp

Fire Extinguisher Training
The Westminster Fire Department offers fire extinguisher training for businesses and citizen groups at no charge. The training involves classroom learning and may involve some live-fire exercises using fire extinguishers. To learn more about extinguishers and to schedule a training, contact Fire Administration at 303-658-4500.
Building Evacuation Planning and Training
The Westminster Fire Department provides assistance to businesses in planning and conducting evacuation drills for fires or other emergencies. If you would like more information about creating an evacuation plan or to schedule a training, please contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at 303-658-4500.
Residential Knox Box Loaner Program
The Residential Knox Box Program is another service that the Westminster Fire Department provides to citizens to help first responders gain entry into the citizen's home. This program was created for citizens that may need a medical or fire response but are unable to answer the door due to medical reasons, physical disabilities, or impairments. By providing a Knox Box on the exterior of the dwelling, first responders can gain access to the citizen in need without having to cause damage to doors or other barriers. The Knox Box is only accessible by emergency response personnel and is securely mounted to the door or exterior of the citizen's home. The citizen will pay a one-time $50 lease charge for the use of this box until it is no longer needed. The $50 fee is applied as a tax-deductible donation to the Westminster Fire BURN Fund that assists families that have been displaced by fire loss.
For questions about this program or to sign up, please contact Fire Administration at 303-658-4500.
Commercial Knox Box Program
Commercial Knox Boxes are required on all new buildings in Westminster protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system, fire alarm system and other special hazard fire protection system. Other buildings or occupancies may also be required to install a Knox Box based on the occupancy type or other factors. Knox Boxes allow the fire department to gain access to these commercial buildings in cases of emergency. Knox Boxes are checked on a routine basis during fire protection inspections. To begin the process of purchasing a Knox Box for your commercial business, you can contact the Knox Company for more information and to acquire a Knox Box for your business.
