The Westminster Fire Department offers a professional work environment with several opportunities to learn, develop, and advance. Westminster Fire is a full-service, municipal fire department and offers a host of career opportunities which include working in fire line operations, emergency medical services, construction plan reviews and permitting, fire safety inspections, public education, emergency management, and fire safety training. We also offer opportunities for a wide range of fire special teams including wildland firefighting, hazmat operations, dive rescue and more. 

Individuals who have a solid work ethic, a desire to serve their community, strong character, and the ability to operate well within a team are strongly encouraged to consider a career with Westminster Fire. The firefighter position consists of skilled firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, as well as providing emergency medical services. The firefighter position involves protection of life and property through firefighting and rescue activities and is performed under and evaluated by a company officer. The firefighter position is a commissioned, safety sensitive position.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 18 years of age
  • Driver License and safe driving record
  • Ability to legally work in the United States

Desirable Qualifications:

  • EMT-B or Paramedic Certification

Candidates that completed COFIRE application and testing in the previous twelve months will be contacted by the City of Westminster Human Resources Department notifying them to complete the city application.

Complete the Job Specific Performance Assessment (JSPA) which is a standardized physical ability test. The JSPA assesses a candidate's ability to perform the physical tasks that will be required of a firefighter on the job.   

Upon successful completion of the JSPA, candidates will bescheduled for an in-person interview with a panel made up of Fire Departmentand Human Resources personnel. Candidates from that interview that moveinto the top pool will be scheduled for an interview with the Executive Chiefs ofthe Fire Department.

The top candidates from the Executive Chief interviews willneed to complete a background packet and a thorough background investigation.

The top candidates from the Executive Chief interviews willbe scheduled for a medical examination and a psychological test.

Candidates that pass all portions of testing will besubject to a pre-employment drug screen. Upon hiring, new employees will befingerprinted and criminal histories will be reviewed to meet CJIS guidelines.Employees that are found to have criminal backgrounds at this point may bereleased from employment.

Candidates that successfully complete the process will behired and required to complete the North Area EMT class. Upon passing thatcourse, the recruit will then participate in the North Area Fire Academy. Allcandidates (with or without EMT certification) will be required to complete theEMT class. All recruits will have to complete the North Area Fire Academy.

Fitness & JSPA Prep Program

Fitness Testing

The Job Specific Performance Assessment (JSPA) physical ability evaluation is designed to measure a candidate’s capacity to perform the physical tasks required of a firefighter. These tasks include:

  • Tool carry

  • Ladder raise

  • Ladder extension

  • Hose drag

  • Stair climb

  • Horizontal stand pipe hoist

  • Dummy drag

Candidates are required to complete the aerial ladder climb which consists of climbing the 107-foot aerial ladder to the top, receiving acknowledgement of the climb from a firefighter on the ground, and descending the aerial ladder. The ladder will be placed at a 70-degree climbing angle. Candidates shall have safety devices attached to them during the climb. The ladder climb does not have a time requirement. Candidates must successfully complete the ladder climb prior to the JSPA.
